The Hidden Curriculum

This refers to the values and impressions which pupils gain from school.  These are many and varied but include the following:

  • A sense of pride in presentation of work
  • A commitment to give of one’s best at all times
  • Standards of ethics and morality that encourage integrity, honesty and respect for others
  • Concern for fellow pupils
  • Concern for society

The Foundation Stage

The foundation stage of education makes a positive contribution to children’s early development and learning.  Children develop rapidly during the time they are in the Gan and in the Reception class – physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially.  The foundation stage is about developing key learning skills, such as listening, speaking, persistence and learning to work together and co-operating with other children.  It is also about developing early communication, literacy and numeracy skills that will prepare them for key stage 1 of the National Curriculum.

The early learning goals establish expectations for most children to reach by the end of the foundation stage and cover six areas –

  • communication, language and literacy
  • mathematical development
  • knowledge and understanding of the world and Jewish culture
  • personal, social and emotional development
  • physical development
  • creative development
Establishing positive attitudes towards learning is essential to ultimate success.  These attitudes are established through the child’s early experience of school.  In the foundation stage it is essential that children enjoy their learning and realise that learning is useful and purposeful.
